Science Curriculum Inc. is a textbook-publishing company dedicated to quality programs in science for middle schools and high schools. Currently we publish the Seventh Edition of Introductory Physical Science (IPS) by Haber-Schaim, Cutting, Kirksey, and Pratt. The program is known for its Hands-on, Minds-on approach. The major attributes of the course are summarized in the two tables below.

SCI is commited to the in-service advancement of IPS teachers. It sets aside 5% of sales as a credit to be used for SCI-authorized Workshops. Call for details.

Why IPS Works for Students

  • Emphasizes experimentation and logical development rather than cataloging of facts and names.
  • Encourages students to think critically and find their own answers.
  • Teaches lab skills--measuring and recording data.
  • Develops analytical skills-- interpreting data and drawing conclusions.
  • Builds self-confidence.
  • Teaches students to work independently and in teams.
  • Stresses the need for evidence in reaching conclusions.
  • Provides a solid foundation for future science courses.
  • Provides a wide variety of problems, ranging from simple confidence-builders to those requiring high-level thinking skills.
  • Motivates a wide range of students.

Why IPS Works for Teachers

  • Allows teachers to act as leaders in their students' learning.
  • Provides suggestions for each experiment--including schedules, equipment, technical hints, safety precautions, and sample data--in a comprehensive Teacher's Guide and Resource Book.
  • Supports teachers by providing answers to all questions, including further insights and a variety of approaches, in the Teacher's Guide and Resource Book.
  • Gives teachers the tools for a comprehensive evaluation of their students' progress--including lab tests--in the Assessment Package.
  • Enables teachers to interpret the source of their students' errors on multiple-choice tests with a unique Diagnostic Software.
  • Offers teachers residential and local workshops in which authors and veteran IPS teachers provide hands-on experience with all aspects of the course.
